1.
Georgia 03:19
Georgia- Georgia was your deathbed crowded by many kids with palms wide out-stretched? Oh Georgia #8 you sure found out it’s only money you can live without it. Oh Georgia #8 the only action you see is on the street 180 degrees. Oh Georgia tell your strange grandbaby with the white trash grin to quit staring at me. (to please stop staring at me)
2.
John and Donna- We’re all old men now. Where did the nine years go? We’re all old men now. Where did the nine years go? The more years you walk around the more you think you know. We’re all old men now. That it unless you’re a girl. We’re all old men now. That is unless you’re a girl. Then you’re a lovely old lady you make a statue’s hair go curl Old arms and old legs, you’re all old and grey. Your child hood’s so far away. So sit and rot away. Don’t listen to these words, not a word they say. We’re all old men now, 30 rings on a tree We’re all old men now, 30 rings on a tree The more years you walk around, the more things you see. An old man with an old lady, there’s nothing else I’d rather be.
3.
Everett 03:42
Everett- Old Everett is 80 and the pepper is his lady. Bu,t from a snail he couldn't save her. So he won’t grow anymore. He says he can’t afford the heartache endured. Nature has him disturbed. In a parking lot kneeling, with a flower bed feeling for every weed he’s been killing, another grows in the sun to plague his only one. His one and only one Nature’s only son.
4.
Rose 03:47
Rose- Rose, Give me some time? Show me the way? Show me the way to sweep That’s better than mine? I know you’re kind but, rose it’s just sad. The notes that you leave on the front porch are just making me mad. So much to see and so much for you to do. So, take your lunch orders and be through Rose, I know you’re sad but, no need to be rude Roses they grow with water but, people need food So much to see and so much for you to do. So, take your lunch orders and be through.

breezeway 04:10
Breezeway- One, two, three-four, five-six, seven, eight-nine, ten-eleven, twelve.
6.
Richard 03:46
Richard- I’m paranoid and I’m looking old as I feel. It’s my luck, it’s my luck, it’s my luck. The broad in the cut off jeans is no friend of Charlie’s. So, I sit in my folding chair and pretend I am not there. I’m paranoid and I’m looking old as I feel. It’s my boy, it’s my boy, it’s my boy. When I am dead and buried in the oddfellows cemetery, I hope that I can leave my grave and haunt with a smile on my face.
7.
Chuck 03:24
Chuck- Some birds have heart. Some birds have a hole. Some birds know the one but, not you. Some birds have a home. Some birds have a goal. Some birds keep their souls but, not you. No, not you. Some black love. Some white clothes can bring you home and send him below. Some birds have a heart. Some birds have a gun. This birds gonna love his son but, not you. No, not you. Some black love. Some white clothes, can bring you home and send him below.
8.
Larry 03:05
Larry- In my mind your heads already rolling. In my mind your body is already frozen. In my mind your brain magnets been stolen. In my mind your blood is thick and stroking.
9.
Ken 05:32
Ken- If you call my name in a different way. I bet the same thing will happen in the same way. If you call my name from a different space. The loving in me will come right to place. If you called my name... My baby sees me as a let down, and I kind of feel the same. But, I won’t be held down by this tank, no by this tank of oxygen. Man, if you’d seen me play back in my younger days. Man, you’d be amazed that now I’m tethered to this tank. If you called my name... My baby sees me as a let down, and I kind of feel the same. But, I won’t be held down by this tank, no by this tank of oxygen Oh no... My eyes won’t be weeping, oh no and my mind won’t be sleeping, oh no and my heart won’t be bleeding, oh no and my lungs will be breathing oh no.
10.
Joyce 04:40
Joyce- I know I’m right, when I’m right. I see my blotchy skin and this bottle of butts that I’m snubbing out in. He thinks we’ve got something, but there’s none. I don’t know what it is but, I can’t help feeling it’s dangerous to be rolling around in a mind like his. You have to keep looking to find. I keep seeing angels, all the time and a ball of fire in the sky and a ghost is peeking through the blinds. I know what I know, when I know it. From the second seeing or the praying part of the christian in me. They help me keep being kind. But, I just can’t do it when I can hear his dirty words and I can sense his dirty mind I have to keep looking to find. I keep seeing angels, all the time and a ball of fire in the sky and a ghost is peeking through the blinds. ( I can’t take this anymore)
11.
Charlie 04:06
Charlie- I’m paranoid and I’m looking old as I feel. I’ve seen the world but, missed most from the ballast of a boat. And, I’ve put my memories down in water and orange and brown. In the oils I have around. Before the cemetery tied me down. I’m paranoid and I’m looking old as I feel. That’s my love, that’s my love, it’s my love. She don’t come around very much since my pension is all dried up. I’ve got my cooking and cleaning up and the painting is all I’ve got. So this one belongs to her. And this one’s an elephant herd. And this one’s an ocean bird. And this one’s a forgotten world. That’s how it is, and how it was. At least for us, that’s how it really was.

Written and Recorded by Neil Jackson

It started 20 years ago, after hearing a story while fixing a sink in a yellowing, smoke filled apartment. Every song was inspired by a story I was told while working as an on site "fix it man" in this aging apartment complex. Most of the tenants were dust bowl okies who moved west for a better life. But, in reality, their dreams of success were never realized. They struggled, grew sick, old, and were left forgotten, staring out of their dingy living room windows. I can't say how many of these people died lonely in these apartments over the years. I'm sure it was a lot. I eventually moved on, but their stories never left my thoughts. This album is an attempt to share their tales.

about

Built Like Alaska Oakdale, California

Built Like Alaska: a rock band from California. Surrounded by rolling pastures, a cold river, and stony foot hills, the band has developed their craft to reflect the scenery surrounding them. Bringing a rural perspective to sturdy rock songs, the music has been said to conjure images both "warm and rich as the central valley sun” and as isolated as a “mic stand draped in cob webs...." ... more
